A Piano Tribute to the Hunger Games
Madge gave Katniss two gifts. First, on the day of the reaping of the 74th Hunger Games, a gold mockingjay pin. It was to become a symbol of empowerment. Later that year, in the months leading up to the Victory Tour, Madge gave Katniss the second gift of piano lessons.
Each time I read The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, I was moved by the healing nature of music to the people of Panem. I wondered – what piano music would Madge and Katniss play together?
Certainly, Madge would know piano versions of the folk music common in District 12. Part one of her notebook contains a lullaby, a patriotic song, a song that hinted at political oppression, a song sung at simple wedding ceremonies and a fiddle tune for wedding dances.
But in the post-apocalyptic world, would any of our present-day favorites be remembered? Perhaps after the fall of political systems and through the struggles of climate change our most beloved music would somehow survive, passed down through an aural tradition. Would this music remain in original form or would it change as it passed generation to generation? Part two of Madge’s Notebook contains classics that suggest a transformation has taken place; that the music remembered is a distant echo of our world. The lines between “Classical” and classic rock are blurred as the two genres are blended together.
The final two pieces are from Madge to Katniss. The duet is about the bond of friendship and the camaraderie that comes of making music together. And then there is the piece based on Rue’s signal that all is well, that mourns a childhood that should have been carefree.

Reviews:
“The pieces are so well thought out and student’s will love the literary connections. One of the things that Rebekah mentioned that really impressed me was that she “tried to imagine what piano music of our era would have survived into the future world of District 12” ~ Penny Lazarus
“Many of the pieces are original compositions, but there are also some interesting pieces inspired by famous piano pieces…. The pieces seem to evoke the original classical work, rather than exist merely as a simplified version. Very creative!” ~ Joy Morin, Color in My Piano blog Read the Full Review…
“…a very creative and unique music book containing songs that capture the series’ setting and story really well, while tastefully interweaving snippets of famous pieces…” ~ Natalie Weber, Music Matters blog – Read the Full Review…
