Music heard on Titanic‘s maiden voyage arranged for piano. Pieces have been selected from passenger accounts, from the White Star Line’s official songbook, from Titanic movies you have seen, and two are originals written in 1912 styles.

As a child I heard tales of the Titanic and its tragic maiden voyage; of the First, Second and Third Class passengers and their fates, of the opulence of the ship, the fanfare in the press, the brash claim that it was “unsinkable.” Then, how things went terribly wrong when someone decided to steam at top speed through the North Atlantic waters where icebergs lurked in the darkness. Each time the tale was told, the teller would shiver and muse about the biggest mystery of all. No one knew where the Titanic lay beneath the waves of the Atlantic.

I remember the excitement the day my schoolteacher announced that the Titanic had been discovered! With my classmates I pored over the National Geographic that compared black and white photographs of the ship before it departed with color photos of the submerged ghostly ship. Light lines streaming through murky water, rusticles spewing out, haunting, empty windows.

We were gripped with a fascination for the RMS Titanic. Our music teacher picked up on this and taught us to sing When That Great Ship Went Down. With gusto we sang the alternate lyrics, “Uncles and aunts, little children lost their pants, it was sad when that great ship went down!”

It is a story worth retelling. In this piano book you will find music that recounts the tale of the Titanic’s one and only voyage: original music that captures the mood of the day, numbers that were performed for passengers by the hired White Star Line musicians, popular music that would have been played by Third Class passengers who had their own instruments, and music that was bravely played as the ship was sinking. Let the Titanic story live on through piano music!

In 1912 the world was shocked when RMS Titanic, the world’s most luxurious ocean liner, sank to the bottom of the ocean, taking more than 1,200 souls with it. Countless books and movies have retold the story of the voyage, and of the ship after it was discovered in 1985. For the first time you can take part in the story by playing music that was heard on Titanic‘s only voyage. The pieces have been chosen from passenger accounts, from the White Star Line’s official songbook, several will be recognized from the Titanic movies you have seen, and two are originals written in 1912 styles. All have been arranged to offer early to late intermediate pianists music you will love to learn, and fall easily under the hands.

Reviews:

“Your keen sense of musicality shines though in each selection. The blend of well-crafted compositions with historical snippets and photos is sure to make this book a success with students and teachers.” ~ Anne Crosby Gaudet, NS<

“Every kid who came yesterday took home a copy of Titanic. Their eyes were THIS big – and [one student] pointed out that Alexander’s Ragtime Band is one of the tunes that the Merry-Go-Round plays at Upper Clements” ~ Anna-Maria, NS

“The pieces in these books are in various styles and offer differing challenges, making them ideal selections for festival, or a recital program. Students would enjoy dressing in period costumes and performing these selections at a recital, or perhaps at a senior’s residence. I would highly recommend these pieces for use in your studio for teaching and performing purposes.” ~ Barbara Long, The Quarter Note (NBRMTA quarterly), NB
